Mildenhall Fen Tigers rider Matt Marson looking forward to start of delayed season

Matt Marson hopes he can take his career to new heights by making his third consecutive season with the Mildenhall Fen Tigers his best yet, writes Graham Clark.

Due to the ongoing impact of the coronavirus pandemic, the 2020 speedway season has been put on hold until June 15 at the earliest, and as a result the 20-year-old currently remains at home in his native Australia.

Having started to improve his form towards the back end of last term, Marson is keen to try to pick up where he left off whenever he is able to return to the UK.

“With this virus it has put a hold on the season for now. I was meant to be leaving Australia on the 23rd of last month but we have now put my flight on hold till we know we can get going again,” he said.

“I’m pleased to be back with Mildenhall as I felt I was really going towards the end of last season and I’m hoping to pick up where I left off.

“It’ll be great to see everyone again and I’m looking forward to seeing all the fans.”

While Marson is yet to turn a wheel racing in England this year, he has experienced some mixed fortunes on the track back home.

“The virus has affected my training as it has also cancelled some races over here but luckily we can still practice,” said Marson.

“I’ve done a few meetings here. It was a bit of a slow start but I maxed out and won the King of Pinjar.

“That was my last meeting before I was meant to fly out which was good as it would have sent me off on a bit of a high.”

Having received a taste of racing at Championship level with the Edinburgh Monarchs last year, Marson has made it one of his aims to try and hold down a place in speedway’s second tier this campaign – as well as helping the Fen Tigers push for silverware.

“My aims this year are to ride well and score some good points, put some points on my average and really push for a championship spot this year,” said Marson.

“As well as those individual targets, hopefully I can help get some silverware for the club.”
