Ely paddlers overcome their hosts

Ely I recorded a 7-3 victory from their recent trip to Fulbourn III in Division One of the Ely and District Table Tennis League.

An enthusiastic start from Fulbourn’s Nick Gatherer was quickly subdued by some impressive attacking play from Ashley Rowe.

After that, David Lam recovered from two sets down to overcome a consistent performance from Ely’s Neil Abram.

Julian Atudosie demonstrated some of his trademark attacking shots, but struggled to cope with the spin serves and forehand loops of Neil Weir.

Gatherer and Lam both gained wins over Weir, while Rowe and Abram gained a further three points for Ely with convincing straight-set victories.

The final singles match was a tense affair that saw Abram beat Gatherer 12-10 in the fifth set, before Gatherer and Atudosie let a two-set lead slip to succumb 12-10 to Rowe and Abram in the fifth set of the doubles.

n Ellesmere I defeated Ely III by a 6-4 margin in their Division Two encounter.

Karen Byford and Rob Boyce put early wins on the board for Ellesmere, but Ely responded through Andrew Blake and Neil Weir, who had got the better of Tom Pizey in the first match of the night.

Boyce and Simon Johnson won their respective singles encounters to put Ellesmere 4-3 ahead in what was turning out to be an unpredictable encounter.

Ely levelled the scoreline once again, but Pizey was involved in singles and doubles victories to seal the win.
