Enable hunting a 10th Group 1 victory in the Darley Yorkshire Oaks at York
Frankie Dettori can take another step towards setting a new personal record for Group 1 victories in a calendar year when he rides Enable in the Darley Yorkshire Oaks today (3.35pm).
The Newmarket-based jockey’s current best 12-month return at the top level stands at 16 – a figure he is currently three short of matching following Sunday’s win aboard the John Gosden-trained Coronet in France on Sunday.
Nine-time Group 1-winning Enable is the odds-on favourite to triumph on day two of the Ebor Festival at York, although Dettori has conceded she will need to bring her ‘A-game’ to get the better of Aidan O’Brien’s Magical.
I am so excited about Enable in the Yorkshire Oaks,” the Italian wrote in his Ladbrokes blog.
“We did not expect Magical to be supplemented so it’s not going to be easy and it’s a worry for me.
“There is not much between the two fillies and my horse will have to bring her A-game.
“We have beaten her twice and if Enable turns up, she is the favourite.
“I do not take anything for granted though; Magical is a good filly in her own right.
“It could be the last time we see Enable run in England so I have mixed feelings of nerves and excitement.
“I just hope she can show what she is made of. She has become the darling of horse racing.”
The following day Dettori is set to partner Gosden’s star stayer Stradivarius in the Group 2 Weatherbys Hamilton Lonsdale Cup Stakes (2.25pm).
Dettori added: Stradivarius has been the peoples favourite so I am looking forward to the Lonsdale Cup Stakes. He wears his heart on his sleeve and does not know how to run a bad race.
“He likes the fight and he likes York.
“Last year he came here after a long season so he was tired but he seems to be in better form going into the race this time so fingers crossed he gets the job done.”
