Title draws closer for Lakenheath
Lakenheath’s bid to be crowned Marshall Hatchick Two Counties Championship Division Two champions is down to the last two matches of the campaign.
After Saturday’s clash with bottom-of-the-table Ipswich & East Suffolk was cancelled due to the strugglers being unable to raise a side, Lakenheath were awarded 20 points.
It means Shane Leech’s side are 19 points clear at the summit ahead of second-placed Haverhill before Saturday’s short trip to Mildenhall II (1pm).
It also provides Lakenheath with the opportunity to gain some revenge, having lost the reverse fixture by a 12-run margin in June.
Mildenhall’s second string go into the Wamil Way clash sitting fourth in the standings with nine victories alongside their name.
l Fifth-placed Fordham’s (142-6) CCA Junior League One North campaign ended with a four-wicket victory over Burwell & Exning III (138-9) on Saturday.
Burwell & Exning batted first after winning the toss but Clinton Cornwell struck twice in as many balls to reduce the visitors to 11-2.
A partnership of 54 between senior player Tim Catley (49) and Jack Hindle Smith (23) steadied the ship to some degree, but once these two had gone, wickets began to fall and the visitors were left reeling on 86-7 from 25 overs.
Stubborn resistance from the lower order enabled the visitors to reach 138-9 at the close of their innings.
Fordham lost two wickets in the first nine overs in reply, but Gavin Harding continued his good form to make 42, with George Darling supporting with 16.
With the match delicately poised, Harry Harvey (29) and Adam Cornwell (18) put Fordham on the road to victory and they reached their target with four wickets and eight overs in hand.
