Tim Catley's century helps Burwell & Exning to win East Anglian Premier League season opener against Vauxhall Mallards

Burwell & Exning (431-6) top the early East Anglian Premier League standings courtesy of their 92-run home win over Vauxhall Mallards (339-7) on Saturday.

Hosting skipper Joe Tetley won the toss against his opposite number and opted to bat first, on what was the opening day of the season at Mingay Park.

And it proved to be an inspired decision as openers Tom Griffiths (68) and Australian Tom Jagot (59) put on 133 for the first wicket before the latter fell to the bowling of Troy Allan.

Jagot’s dismissal brought Tetley to the crease and he continued where his team had let off, scoring a quickfire 90 from just 61 deliveries – a knock that included 11 fours and two sixes.

But, even Tetley’s performance was overshadowed by the performance of number five batsman Tim Catley, who became the first Burwell & Exning player to score a century in 2019.

Catley – a long-serving Exning player prior to last year’s merger between the two clubs – scored an unbeaten 103 runs, taking just 71 balls to reach that total.

He hit six maximums and added a further seven fours, while Jamie Seabrook (39) made a useful contribution in partnership.

It was a victory target that was always going to be difficult for visiting Mallards to get anywhere near challenging and so it proved, with Sam Rippington (2-50), Josh Arskey (2-42) and Seabrook (3-95) among the wickets for the triumphant Burwell & Exning.

On Saturday, Tetley’s men will travel to face a Copdock & Old Ipswichian side who, similarly, started the new campaign with a victory and 25 points (11am).

Copdock were impressive 51-run winners away at former champions Swardeston on Saturday, with opening batsman Ben Claydon (62) top scoring and Suffolk’s Matt Hunn (3-39) the pick of their bowling attack.
