William Buick makes winning return to action on Charlie Appleby-trained Lazuli after lengthy lay-off

Newmarket-based jockey William Buick made a winning return to the saddle on Friday after an injury lay-off.

On May 11 Buick was unseated by Sir Busker on their way to the start at Ascot.

The 31-year-old went on to finish that meeting and also rode a winner 24 hours later, but subsequent examinations at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge showed that the Norway-born jockey was suffering from post head-injury syndrome – a condition that can last for a number of months.

The retained Godolphin rider remained a key part of the operation throughout his absence and fittingly it was for Charlie Appleby that he rode to victory aboard Lazuli at Newmarket on Friday.

Buick told Racing TV: “I have been very fortunate, I have had so much support since I have been off, everyone has been great, especially my family and Charlie and Sheikh Mohammed.

“They have really been behind me and supported me, and when you are off for a length of time it just gives you that confidence and really gives you motivation to get back better than you’ve ever been.

“I am in a very fortunate position to be coming back to nice horses to ride and I am very thankful for all the support I have.

“He was one of the first horses I rode when I started (back) riding out, he is a lovely horse.

“He is a pretty quick horse, I think, he showed a great turn of foot there and it will be interesting to see what trip he ends up being best at.”

Meawhile, Appleby added: “William is a vital part of the team. I am delighted to give him his first winner back.

“From the team’s point of view, we need him for the future, not just for today, it’s just great to have him back and to have a winner.

“Like any sportsman you want to come back and have a winner and work away from there.”

Buick went on to win at the same track 24 hours later with Rose Of Kildare for Mark Johnston.
