Elite time trial and mountain bike competitor Jason Bouttell was the main attraction at the second round of this season’s Mud Sweat and Gears (MSG)at the new Phoenix Cycleworks-owned Kentford course on Sunday.

Newmarket’s Bouttell won the Elite Men’s section in a time of one hour, 19 minutes and one second — almost a minute quicker than second-placed Richard Jones of Renvale RT.

Bouttell’s involvement helped to attract a record number of entrants for a round of MSG races and also gave the hosts a boost during what was their first official event.

“Jason smashed it and it was great for the spectators that have not seen him race to see what makes him so good,” said co-organiser Jeremy Gredley.

“It was so good to see him in action and to be fair, the other competitors knew they were racing for second and third place.

“To have such a big local rider help us out on launch day made a positive difference.”

As for the day itself, Gredley was pleased that it passed by with no incident.

In the days and weeks leading up to the event there had been doubters on social media who had suggested the course was too small and not challenging enough.

But Gredley has received nothing but good feedback, with MSG hoping to organise further race days at the facility over the summer.

“It was everything we hoped for,” he added.

“Spectators had such great views — better than a lot of other courses, where at times you cannot see anything.

“There was plenty of positive vibes, especially from MSG and we are talking about some shorter races, perhaps on Friday nights.

“You are always going to get doubters when something new starts, but we have no complaints.

“It has given us some impetus to make improvements and add some new features to the course.”
