Heath wrap up league title
Despite losing by a 24-run margin, Lakenheath (131) still picked up the necessary points from Saturday’s trip to Clacton-on-Sea (155) to be crowned Marshall Hatchick Two Counties Championship Division Two champions.
Skipper Shane Leech won the toss on the Essex coast and had no hesitation in asking the home side to bat first.
It soon became clear that the wicket offered assistance to the quicker bowlers and it was Carl Manels who made the initial breakthrough when he had Kieron Parkes caught for 3 by Danny Rodic.
The other opener Daniel Smith was fortunate to survive a testing spell from Rodic, and it was Manels (2-34) who claimed the second wicket to leave the home side at 59-2.
With two more wickets required to gain the necessary points to win the league, Ed Garrard (4-36) made a big breakthrough when he had the overseas player caught by Leech.
Paul Pallant (2-22) then had Halim Hossain Biplob adjudged lbw, leaving Clacton on 78- 4.
Sporadic boundaries and some tight bowling resulted in the hosts reaching 155 all out at tea as Harrison Milner claimed 2-23 with his first bowl of the season.
In reply, Lakenheath made a circumspect start and were surprised when the prolific Dominic Palmer, who scored over 1,000 runs this season, was caught behind for 12.
From 35-0, Lakenheath were soon 48-3 as Leech fell lbw to Bradley Pitts.
The partnership of Chris Baugh (36) and Liam Flack (25 not out) gave the visitors some hope of victory, but this soon evaporated as a mix-up ended with Baugh being run out.
Further quick wickets meant that the visitors came up short in their pursuit of victory, but it mattered little as they secured their place in Division One next term.
