Charlie Appleby confident 2,000 Guineas favourite Pinatubo has improved during the winter

QIPCO 2,000 Guineas favourite Pinatubo 'has grown and strengthened over winter' – that is according to his trainer Charlie Appleby.

The son of Sharmadal – trained by Godolphin's Appleby at his Moulton Paddocks base in Newmarket – enjoyed a memorable juvenile campaign in 2019, winning on all six of his starts.

Such form means he tops the betting market ahead of the first Classic of the season, which is due to be run at the Rowley Mile on Saturday, June 6.

And Appleby's feeling is that last season's Darley Dewhurst Stakes winner has 'trained on'.

"At this time of the year, the question everybody is asking re the Guineas favourite is ‘has he trained on?’ We are not going to have conclusive proof until the 2,000 Guineas, but my gut feeling is that Pinatubo has trained on," said Appleby.

"No buttons will be pressed until the big day but from what we are seeing at home, he has gone the right way.

"Mentally, I see no change in him. His demeanour is the same from two to three. He remains totally relaxed.

"Physically, though, I do see change. He has grown and strengthened over winter.

"You can also tell he is an experienced racehorse now. He goes about his business professionally, and nothing fazes him."
