Abbeycroft Leisure to host Forest Heath awards for first time
Abbeycroft Leisure will be staging sports awards in Forest Heath for the first time this year.
Suffolk’s largest leisure trust, Abbeycroft Leisure, this week announced it will be holding sports awards for both St Edmundsbury and Forest Heath.
St Edmundsbury Sports Awards is in its 10th year but it is the first time Abbeycroft Leisure has staged sister awards in Forest Heath.
The leisure trust is seeking nominations across 11 categories for the St Edmundsbury Sports Awards and the Forest Heath Sports Awards, including Sports Personality of the Year, Individual Achievement and Triumph Over Adversity categories.
For the first time, members of the public will also be able to attend the award ceremonies to celebrate their local sporting heroes, as well as pay tribute to the volunteers who support them.
Both awards are being sponsored by Greene King with local companies being invited to sponsor the individual awards themselves.
Abbeycroft Leisure chief executive Warren Smyth said: “In West Suffolk we live in a truly great sporting community. This is reflected in all those individuals and teams taking part in sport, their clubs, societies, groups, and all those who support them.
“St Edmundsbury Sports Awards is now celebrating its 10th year and we are looking forward to a great event. As our trust has expanded over the last year, and taken on new facilities in Forest Heath, we thought it fitting to hold similar awards in this area, to recognise all those making a significant impact here, too.
“Sport is one of the most fulfilling and rewarding activities a person can take part in, from those who simply want to help improve their health and wellbeing, to those achieve sporting greatness.
“All of this all helps build our sense of community, a well as creating jobs, boosting our local economy and achieve national recognition.
“Those taking part in and those supporting sport, at any level, are to be applauded, and with these two awards ceremonies, this is what we aim to do.”
St Edmundsbury Sports Awards will be held at The Apex, Bury on October 11, while Forest Heath Awards will be held on September 30 at Newmarket Leisure Centre.
On Tuesday, nomination launch events were held at Bury St Edmunds Leisure Centre and Newmarket Leisure Centre. Nominations are being sought for each of the two Sports Awards in 11 categories.
