A woman walking on crutches in Newmarket was robbed by a man who stole cash from her purse.

The victim, aged in her thirties, had walked from High Street, through Kingston Passage, to an area in Park Lane near the Sunnyside flats when the incident took place at about 9.30pm on Thursday.

A man approached from behind her and tried to steal her hangbag, but failed when he could not get the strap, which lay across her body, over her head.

The suspect managed to unzip her handbag and steal £240 in cash from her purse, which he discarded.

He then shouted “oi” at the victim before making off up Park Lane in the direction of Park Avenue and Granby Street.

Police described the suspect as being a white man, around 5ft 5ins tall, of medium build, with thin stubble on his face.

He was wearing a dark blue/black hooded top, grey jogging bottoms and padded, ski-style, dark blue gloves.

Police are appealing for any witnesses to come forward.
