Veteran former Royal jockey Willie Snaith officially opened Tesco’s new multi-million pound Extra store today, 27 years after he opened the store it replaced.
The launch was a community celebration with store manager Alistair Thomson being joined by colleagues, customers and representatives St Louis Roman Catholic Academy and Leading Lives, winners of the Helping Hand competition that has been running in the existing store. The initiative asked customers to nominate local causes to receive a share of a £2,000 donation.
And 87-year-old Willie nominated the British Red Cross and the Injured Jockeys’ Fund to receive a further £1,000 each as part of the opening day celebration.
Hundreds of shoppers were at the new store, which covers 66,000 sq ft, and is being run by a team of 390 staff. For full story and more pictures see next week’s Newmarket Journal.
