Town councillors observed a minute’s silence in memory of former Newmarket mayor Bill Burch before their meeting on Monday.
Mr Burch, who was mayor in 2007 was one of the first councillors elected to the authority when it was formed in 1999.
He died at West Suffolk Hospital in Bury St Edmunds last week aged 83.
In a tribute, Cllr Warwick Hirst said Mr Birch had been a councillor renowned for his mediation skills and was held in high regard by fellow councillors.
It was only last month that Mr Burch, who was born in Newmarket and had worked as a general manager for CI Caravans , and his wife Sheila celebrated their diamond wedding.
His funeral service will be held at St Mary’s Church on Friday April 10 at noon.
