The USAF at RAF Mildenhall says it was one of its airmen who died following a serious road traffic collision this morning, Tuesday June 7.
Emergency services were called at 6.30am to reports of a three vehicle collision on the B1112. The male driver of one of the vehicles was declared dead at the scene.
This afternoon RAF Mildenhall posted on its Facebook page: “An airman stationed at RAF Mildenhall was fatally injured in an accident this morning on B1112 between Eriswell and Lakenheath Village.
“We will release more information as it is available. We ask that you respect the next of kin by not posting identifying information on social media.”
It also urged personnel to allow extra time when commuting via the road, which is due to have its speed limit reduced from 60mph to 40mph because of the number of accidents there have been on it. It is the main route between Lakenheath and RAF Mildenhall.
Road closures were in place whilst a collision investigation began, but all roads have now reopened.
Any witnesses are asked to contact the Serious Collision Investigation Team on 101, quoting reference CAD 36 of 7 June
