Building Soham’s new railway station could cost more than £21.8 million, a new report estimates.

In a budget update for the project discussed by the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority board on Wednesday, accountants said completing the station would cost taxpayers £21,864,769.

The rail scheme already has more than £1 million of funding, but Mayor James Palmer asked members to spend an extra £1.7 million to complete the latest design round.

If built, commuters will be able to connect to Ely and Bury St Edmunds, but not to Newmarket.

Earlier this year Mr Palmer criticised Network Rail for delays in delivering a ‘simple piece of infrastructure’ and a report from his authority said the station could be completed by 2021, nine months ahead of the original forecast.

The report said this could happen because of good project management and government lobbying.
