Four Newmarket primary schools are among 27 across west Suffolk which have signed up to a new initiative aimed at raising standards in maths.
The Newmarket hub, which is being lead by David Perkins, head teacher at Laureate Primary, also includes town schools All Saints, Houldsworth Valley and Paddocks, as well as Exning Primary School. Wickhambrook Primary School is also involved.
The West Suffolk Maths Collaborative project has just been awarded £60,000 by Suffolk County Council from its Raising the Bar Challenge Fund. The project’s five year mission is to secure outstanding mathematics outcomes across the 27 schools involved and to make every teacher a confident teacher of mathematics and every pupil , a problem solver. The first year priorities include using world leading lesson study approaches to improve the quality of teaching and learning.
Newmarket county councillor Lisa Chambers, cabinet member for education and skills, said: “The most powerful way of establishing and sustaining a school improvement culture is to get teachers working with each other in classrooms and collaboratively helping to raise the attainment of the pupils.”
