Residents told to be alert for fraudsters going door to door pretending to offer help
Residents have been warned to be alert for scammers going door to door pretending to offer help.
East Cambridgeshire District Council has had reports from worried residents that people were knocking on doors claiming to be from the authority and offering to go shopping.
But the does not operate like this, and householders have been warned to be alert for scammers trying to exploit coronavirus concerns.
Cllr Anna Bailey, leader of East Cambridgeshire District Council, said: "The council would never turn up unannounced. All support is by prior arrangement via the telephone or online, so people know what to expect and when."
She said an incident over the bank holiday weekend was immediately reported to the police and widely shared on social media.
And Cllr Bailey added: “We’re urging residents who need support to use the services arranged by the District co-ordination hub by calling 01353 665555 or by emailing email@example.com where a member of the team will connect them with the appropriate support.
"Alternatively we have an online form where residents can request support at eastcambs.gov.uk/content/coronavirus-community-support"
