Members of an organisation which aims to increase the profile of women in the racing industry will get a chance to go behind the scenes of the world’s most prestigious bloodstock auctioneer, later this month.
Women in Racing will be in Newmarket and at Tattersalls, for its Book 2 October Yearling Sale which gets under way on Wednesday, October 15.
The day will start at the Hamilton Road stables of trainer Ilka Gansere-Levequ, and watching her horses on the town’s training gallops.
Ilka’s is the only female trainer in Newmarket who is also a practising vet and prior to following her dream to become a trainer, Ilka worked as an assistant trainer in the United States where she also worked with legendary horse whisperer Monty Roberts.
At Tattersalls guests will be given an overview of the European bloodstock sales market from Rolline Kavanagh the company’s international marketing executive, followed by an inspection of a selection of yearlings with a leading bloodstock agent.
And their day will be completed by watching the action unfold in sale ring. Each year Tattersalls offers 10,000 thoroughbreds at 15 sales at Newmarket and at Fairyhouse just outside Dublin.
“We are looking forward to welcoming Women in Racing to Tattersalls,” said Rolline. “The day will provide a fascinating insight not only into what goes into getting a racehorse prepared for the racecourse from Ilka at her stables, but at the bloodstock sales too. The majority of racehorse’s pass through the yearling sales so it’s great to find out what the professionals are looking for when buying their next potential champion”.
Tickets for the day cost £25 for Women in Racing members and £35 for guests and includes refreshments, stable visit, lunch at Tattersalls, a sales overview, yearling inspection and auction.
