A champion brewer is holding the first of monthly antique fairs this weekend at one of Newmarket’s more quirky pubs.

The Reindeer Pub in Saxon Street, which is described by owner Martin Kemp as “a mix between a pub and an antiques centre”, will sell old collectibles on indoor and outdoor stalls from 10am to 4pm on Sunday.

Mr Kemp ran an organic ale company in London from 1982 until 2005 and its beer Dark Star was named Champion Beer of Britain by the Campaign for Real Ale in 1987.

In 2008, he relocated Pitfield Brewery to Essex and took over the Newmarket pub, which is open for three days a week and stocks the award-winning recipe, in December.

It also stocks about 250 different bottled beers, local cask ales and traditional ciders and is decorated with antiques and other collectibles.

“If it’s a success I’m going to do country markets with locally made food and crafts,” said Mr Kemp.
