Plans to build 540 house estate in Soham submitted to district planning authority by Cambridgeshire County Council's This Land Ltd

A county council owned development company has submitted its controversial proposals to build a huge new estate in Soham to district planners.

This Land, owned entirely by Cambridgeshire County Council, has filed plans to build the 540 house Soham Eastern Gateway to East Cambridgeshire District Council.

The company has already submitted a version of the plans before, but went on to pull them.

The latest proposal forms two parts. One, a full planning application, is to build 128 properties along with a new roundabout on the A142 and estate roads.

The second is an outline application to build the rest of the estate - another 412 homes - as well as access on to Brewhouse Lane, land for an enlarged medical centre, and new shops and business units.

This Land's own economic projections claimed the build would generate 159 jobs and £10 million to the local economy during construction.

And if the district's planning committee agree to the build, the analysis said once complete the new estate would generate an extra £1 million to its council tax income annually. It also claimed it would generate 127 full time jobs on site.

David Gelling, managing director of This Land, said: "Our proposal aims to positively enhance the eastern area of Soham, with high quality housing for first time buyers through to families and downsizers."

He said the company wanted to make an 'exemplary and accessible' development.

"Because our sole shareholder is Cambridgeshire County Council, the revenue we return to the council supports the delivery of vital front-line services," he added.
