‘Never Forgotten - Forever Honoured’.
After a two year campaign from the community, the American airmen of the 490th Bomb Group, who were based at Eye Airfield during the Second World War, now have a physical memorial in their memory following a poignant dedication on Sunday.
Guest of honour for the day was New York City resident Si Spiegal, a veteran who was a pilot at the airfield in the 1940s.
The ceremony also featured a fly-past tribute from a Flying Fortress and two P-51 Mustangs, while servicemen from RAF Lakenheath and Mildenhall were also present, some in 1940s uniforms.
The project has been funded by about £20,000 through the group’s fundraising, as well as benefitting from nearly £40,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund.
The memorial can be found in Progress Way, in the Mid Suffolk Business Park.
