Shrinking staff numbers at a district council has seen redundant office space turned into a new publc gym.
Officially opened on Monday, and managed by Anglia Community Leisure (ACL) in partnership with Forest Heath District Council, the gym has opened in a vacant wing at the council’s offices in College Heath Road and marks the first step towards the new Mildenhall Hub plan to bring the town’s public services together under one roof.
The facilities, which opened to the public last month, include a purpose-built air conditioned dance studio and large gym with more fitness equipment and a free weights area along with new changing rooms. There are also a range of exercise classes with staff on hand to give users advice and set up personal exercise programmes.
It replaces The Dome leisure centre gym which was restricted at times due to the centre sharing facilities with Mildenhall College Academy but other community use of The Dome in the evenings and at weekends will not be affected.
Nigel Snape, centre manager, said: “We are very pleased with the new gym and already our members are telling us how they are enjoying working out here.”
Cllr Warwick Hirst, Forest Heath Cabinet member for health, leisure and culture, who officially opened the new facility, said: “The new gym looks fantastic and will really improve the services for ACL’s members, new and old. We already share part of our council offices with the JobCentre and the Citizens’ Advice Bureau.
“This is just another evolutionary step towards our exciting ground-breaking vision to create a Mildenhall Hub, bringing leisure, health, education, emergency services and councils onto one site.”
