A man has been arrested on suspicion of rape in Ely.

Police were called in the early hours of Monday to reports of a 'serious sexual assault' near Ely Cathedral.

Yesterday police cordoned off large part of the grounds in the Steeple Row area.

A police spokesman said: "A man in his 40s has been arrested on suspicion of rape in connection with a serious sexual assault near the cathedral in Ely yesterday morning."

The man was held in custody at Parkside Police Station, Cambridge.
