Newmarket's Powters wins top award for its famous sausages
Newmarket sausage producer Powters is celebrating after scooping two top awards in the 2019 UK Sausage Week Awards.
Powters won the top award, the coveted best manufacturer/own brand sausage title, for its famous Newmarket Pig brand of bangers, beating off strong competition from a host of leading producers from all over the UK.
The family-run Newmarket firm, which has been in the sausage business for nearly 140 years, also picked up a ‘highly commended’ award in the innovative category with its spicy Chilli Pig sausages.
The prestigious industry competition judges butchers and sausage brands from across the UK and has become the industry’s cornerstone award for the great British banger.
“We are honoured to to be awarded this fantastic award in this year’s UK Sausage Week competition,” said sales director Tristan Powter.
“It’s a large, well-respected industry competition so we are delighted to scoop this this prize. It’s also fantastic to receive recognition for the Newmarket Pig and Chilli Pig, showing the two ends of the spectrum from our traditional and most popular sausage to our most innovative.”
Powters began making sausages in 1881 and still trades from the family-run traditional butchery and deli in Wellington Street. It also produces a range of sausages under the Powters brand which are widely available in Tesco, Waitrose, Sainsbury, Morrison and the Co-op throughout East Anglia and the East Midlands.
