A couple from Mildenhall are celebrating their milestone Diamond Wedding today.

Len and Kath Howard, of St Catherines Close, said “I do” in Lancashire, where they are both originally from, at St John’s Church in Leyland, on January 23, 1954.

The pair met for the first time when they both worked at a silk mill in Lancashire, when Len was 23 and Kath was 22, not realising at first that their grandfathers had been good friends and served together during the First World War.

“We gelled together very well,” said Len, 85.

Kath, 84, added: “Not many people are married for 60 years. We’ve done very well.”

Len served in the Army from 1946 to 1952 and worked for a bus company for 20 years until 1990. Before that he ran a fish and chip shop and worked on the railway.

The couple moved south 19 years ago and lived at Red Lodge before settling in Mildenhall seven years ago.

They have two children, Lionel and Angela, six grandchildren Matthew, James, Sam, Pippa, Sophie and Lydia, and one great granddaughter, Bethany.

They will celebrate with a joint party to mark their anniversary and their daughter Angela’s birthday at Mildenhall Social Club.
