The n...as they were at in 1955 at Soham C of E Girls’ School in Clay Street which is now a house
Coral Paxton, 69, of Brook Street, is a former pupil of the Soham Church of England Girls’ School in Clay Street, and decided to try and contact ex-school chums when a friend suggested a reunion would be a good way to celebrate her 70th birthday.
Using an old school photograph, Coral and former schoolmates Janet Sterry and Susan Taylor (nee Rouse) set about trying to contact all the pupils pictured.
Their quest began in January and as they worked through names making contact through family and friends, there was some sadness as they discovered 27 of the former pupils had died.
Coral, who went to the school until she was 11 when she left to attend Soham Village College, said: “There were five year classes in the picture but I was still surprised and sad that so many were no longer with us.” But through the search many ex-pupils were found and in total somme 90 tickets were sold for the reunion held at Soham Comrades’Club on June 13 with guests making the trip to the Fens from as far afield as America, Australia and Spain.
“It was a lovey evening,W said Coral, “some people said they had been a bit apprehensive about coming but as soon as they stepped through the door they felt the buzz and it was as if they hadn’t been away.” Guests were greeted by ‘blown-up ‘versions of the class photographer and with a draw the evening raised £184 for Cancer Research.
Meanwhile Coral and her friends are already working on next year’s get together which they hope will be just a successful.
