Plans have been submitted to develop the former De Niro’s nightclub in Newmarket into flats and offices.
The High Street club, was bought in January by The Murfet Group after it had been put up for sale by owner Florida-based Terry Lake in October last year with an asking price of just over £2 million.
This week the developer published its proposals for the 24,000 square ft site which include change of use and restoration of the High Street frontage.
The plans include 290 square metres of office space on the ground floor accessed from the High Street, 36 apartments on the first, second and third floors and a separate block on part of the existing car park behind the former nightclub providing 10 one and two bedroom affordable housing units.
According to the design statement, alterations to the outside of the building, would “substantially improve it in quality and visual terms.”
Eighty year ago the building opened as the Doric Cinema, with 1,124 seats, It closed in 1964 and remained virtually unused for 15 years until it re-opened as The Cabaret Club operating through the 1980s before, as De Niro’s, it established itself as East Anglia’s top nightclub venue.
