Community Chest cash call

Applications for grants from West Suffolk’s Community Chest are now being invited.

Forest Heath District and St Edmundsbury Borough Councils launched the Community Chest in June last year and issued the first grants four months later.

Charities, community and voluntary organisations applying for funding have to be able to demonstrate how their work will help the West Suffolk councils strengthen families and build community resilience.

In Forest Heath, Unit Twenty Three received £5,000 for the FreeFall theatre project in schools designed to help Young Carers by raising awareness of the role they fulfil and supporting them in it.

Its tour of schools reached almost 600 young people, resulting in nine new young adult carers getting training.

In St Edmundsbury, Catch22, Suffolk Positive Futures is helping young people learn life skills and build their confidence by involving them in free weekly sports sessions.

More than £470,000 is available from the chest for 2017/18 and the deadline for applications is September 30. Visit www.westsuffolk.gov.uk/community
