A car drove on the wrong side of the A14 and smashed into a lorry as a group of thieves tried to escape police last night.

In a night long crime spree at about 12.20am today a gang of thieves attempted to break their way into a branch of Spar in Six Mile Bottom, but failed.

About 25 minutes later Cambridgeshire Police had reports of people attempting to break into the North Street Co-op in Burwell - an attempt that was unsuccessful.

Shortly after there were reports of a gang attempting to break into RYCO Optics, The Causeway, in the village.

Officers attended the scene and a car suspected of being involved in the incidents was identified.

The driver failed to stop and a pursuit took place, where the vehicle went the wrong way along the A14 before colliding with a lorry. The suspects then fled the scene.

At 6.15am in a fourth incident, which police believe could be linked, three people entered Webb Stores in Soham and stole the till.

A Cambridgeshire Police spokesman said: "An investigation is ongoing into all four incidents, but no arrests have yet been made.

"Anyone with information regarding this incident should call police on 101, quoting 35/42880/18. Alternatively contact Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555111."
