A lost dog has been reunited with its Newmarket owner after it was taken for a ride on a commuter train for 14 miles.

Cybil, the cairn terrier, was spotted wandering and looking lost by schoolchildren waiting for their train at Newmarket station.

They informed the train’s conductor who took the canine commuter on board and carried it to Cambridge where staff contacted the local council.

Dog warden Samantha Dewing, picked Cybil up from the station at 8.20am and took her to a local vet who was able to check her microchip and trace her owner.

Two hours later Samantha had the terrier back in Newmarket and safely returned to her owner.

A spokesman for train operators Abellio Greater Anglia said: “Our staff at Cambridge were pleased to care for this unexpected four-legged passenger after the stray dog, which, had been found at Newmarket station, was handed in and was brought to Cambridge station on the 08.19 arrival.”
