A Newmarket Academy student who went from being a “challenging pupil” to helping others with behaviour problems, has been named as one of Suffolk’s most inspirational young people.
Sixteen-year-old Amy Smith was one of the winners at Suffolk’s annual Raising the Bar awards announced on Thursday.
“I am completely over the moon and shocked to have won. I can’t thank everyone enough for the support they have given me over the years, especially my mum and dad for standing by my side through everything and a special thanks also to all the staff at Newmarket Academy,” she said. Now in the academy’s sixth form, Amy also helps with extra maths lessons and supporting geography lessons. She also writes the house newsletter and represents the school at primary school parents’ evenings. She is respected by all students at the school and is highly valued by the staff. Rhys Turnbull-Bester of Red Lodge, who attends the Priory School in Bury St Edmunds was named secondary school Rising Star of the year for his achievements.
