The final, which took place on Saturday evening, saw crowds of music fans pack Newmarket's Memorial Hall to cheer on their favourite bands, who played their hearts out for a chance of winning the top spot.

Four acts – Sekura, First Copy, Many Things Untold and Error 404 – went head-to-head at the event, which showcased the musical talent of the region's rock bands.

"The attendance was excellent," said Erika Jensen, of Newmarket Town Council. "People were queuing outside before the doors opened at 7.30pm. All of the bands really had the crowd going."

The playing order was drawn on the night, making it a complete surprise for each of the bands.

Although being the first group on stage can be difficult, First Copy were unfazed by the sea of people as they "played with all the energy and confidence of a headlining band," according to Mrs Jensen.

"One of the judges said they were definitely a marketable band," she added.

Many Things Untold were the second band to appear, despite experiencing some brief technical difficulties.

"The judges were very happy to see that they did not give up despite these audio and instrumental-related issues," said Mrs Jensen.

"The judges also commented on their obvious confidence on stage and their ability to play their style of music so well."

Winning band Error 404, third on stage, were the overall favourites, proving a hit with both the judges and the crowd.

One judge said the band had performed even better at the final than in their original heat.

Another judge added: "Most new bands can't write songs very well (but) they are on a professional level with their hooks."

Last but not least, Sekura had a chance to wow the audience. They returned to this year's final on the vote of the audience, proving they are a true fixture in the Newmarket Battle of the Bands.

Despite mind-blowing performances from all four bands, Error 404 scooped first place, winning a contract to play at next year's Fordham Festival, as well as a chance to headline the monthly band night at Innocence nightclub, Newmarket. They also won £500.

Runners-up First Copy did not go away empty-handed, however, winning £200 and a spot at Fordham Festival next year.

Mrs Jensen added: "Both bands put on a fantastic show and the judges had an extremely difficult time deciding the winner.

She said special thanks should go to Waitrose, Suffolk County Council, Icon Signs, Newmarket Town Council, Newmarket Journal, Innocence, Fordham Festival, Forest Heath Council, and all the volunteers on the Battle of the Bands committee, Lettergold Plastics and the Jockey Club.
