Rugby player Craig Hunter has been named Newmarket Journal Sports Personality of the Year.

Hunter, a past captain of both Newmarket Rugby Club and the Cambridgeshire side, was presented with his trophy at Monday night's Wasp Sports Awards, held at the Millennium Centre in Red Lodge.

The audience of more than 200 heard that Hunter was a member of last season's Eastern Counties side which reached the National Plate final before losing to Durham – a match he missed as he had been concussed in the victorious semi-final against Hampshire.

During the close season, he was the force behind the creation of a rugby club in his home town Mildenhall, which now has a team up and running within six months and has friendly fixtures arranged for most weekends during the season.

A mixture of US servicemen and local players are gaining the benefit of Hunter's coaching and playing skills.

Runners-up were top young golfer Ben Kerr and British junior record breaking powerlifter James Copping, both from Newmarket.
