Junior league move will help boost Tigers

MILDENHALL Fen Tigers co-promoter Kevin Jolly is confident the club’s entrance into the newly-created Anglian Junior League is a step in the right direction.

Last year’s National League Knockout Cup champions will form part of a six-team league to race in the recently-resurrected competition.

Set to join them are representatives from Elite League sides Peterborough, King’s Lynn and Lakeside, as well as Premier League clubs Ipswich and Rye House.

Each team will consist of four riders with meetings raced over six heats after the main action on the track.

“I am very excited about this as this is exactly what speedway needs. Promoting young riders is what this club is all about,” said a delighted Jolly.

“If you look back through the history books of these type of leagues, some good riders have come through them.

“The feedback I have received from the supporters has been good and it seems everybody wants it to be a success.

“It is good to see something positive come out of speedway for a change.”

Although it is not yet clear who will be managing the junior side, one thing that has just about been sorted is the return of the Fen Tigers’ team manager Rob Henry.

“I spoke to Rob and he is definitely up for coming back,” added Jolly.

“He was over the moon as to what happened last season and it took him all of three seconds to make his mind up.”

Fans will receive the first chance of the year to meet some of the riders who are set to represent the club throughout 2012 during a meet the riders session, which will take place at Fenman Bar at the stadium at 7.30pm on Saturday.

“Lewis Blackbird, Dan Halsey and Josh Bates are all confirmed to be there,” said Jolly. “Joe Jacobs and Cameron Heeps are still in Australia, while I am unsure if Stefan Nielsen is in the country at present.”

Former Mildenhall star Jason King raised eyebrows on Thursday after signing for reigning National League champions Scunthorpe.

The 25 year old joins the Lincolnshire club from Premier League outfit the Newcastle Diamonds.
