FANS’ favourite Lewis Blackbird is calling on supporters of the Mildenhall Fen Tigers to dig deep and get behind him financially to help see him through the 2012 National League campaign.

Last year’s rider of the year is sending out an urgent plea to fans of the West Row outfit to help raise the costs he needs to cover a full season.

As reward for those parting with their cash, the 24 year old will place a sticker bearing the sponsor’s name on the covers of his two bikes.

“I need any help I can,” said Blackbird. “In terms of a full season I am looking at needing around £15,000 from start to finish.

“Through the season you have a lot of travelling, vehicle expenses and things like tyres and oil which all add up. I have a few sponsors on board, but not nearly enough.

“I have two new bike covers for the season and they will be like a blank canvas. What I would like to do is sticker-bomb them with people’s and companies’ names that are willing to sponsor me however much or little it be.”

“Ideally I would like 10 big sponsors. If I could get that it would be awesome but every little helps.”

Last season, the plumber and tiler, who lives near Ely, more than doubled his starting average of 3.00 to 7.01.

After starting the season in one of two reserve berths it was not long before the son of former Tigers rider Carl Blackbird briefly occupied the number one spot, before settling into the number four role.

This year, Blackbird is hoping his progress up the speedway ladder can continue, with the big aim in 2012, along with helping Mildenhall pick up more silverware, to bag some guest rides in the Premier League.

“If I want to complete the season and move up to the next level then I need more than a shoestring budget and that is the big reason behind the plea to fans,” added Blackbird.

“Obviously I want to win more trophies at Mildenhall having gone so close to the double last year.

“I think through the season though there will be opportunities for me to race at Premier League level that may not be available to me now.

“If I can make a solid start in the National League then things should start becoming mine for the taking.

“I wish the season could start now as I am raring to get on the bike and start winning races.”

Anyone interested can contact Blackbird on 07834 047604.

n SUPPORTERS will get the first chance to meet the stars of the 2012 team at a special function at the stadium next month.

The event, starting at 7pm, will take place at the Fenman bar, on Saturday, February 18. It is expected that the majority of the team will be in attendance.
