LONDON LEAGUE

DIVISION THREE NORTH EAST

Newmarket 31 Campion 11

NEWMARKET overcome a sluggish start to secure a convincing bonus point win against Campion and lift themselves from the foot of the table.

After kicking away possession, Newmarket quickly found themselves 5-0 down following a passage of awful defence — this proved to be the scare Newmarket required to consolidate their game.

They managed to secure field position with a series of forward drives, culminating in new signing Danielle Cilo barging his way over the line taking several defenders with him.

Cilo has brought additional power to the Newmarket pack and his destructive tackling was evident all afternoon often stopping the Campion attacks dead.

Jimmy Adams was next to cross the line following a tidy break from Mike Reeves, the conversion was added as Newmarket opened up a seven-point lead.

Campion regrouped and managed to go through several phases, demonstrating they have some good quality backs.

Fortunately for Newmarket Liam Cocks, having recovered from his recent injury, was in fine form defensively keeping and eye on his dangerous opposite number. The half ended with Campion kicking a deserved penalty to bring them back within four points of the Scaltback side.

The second half began with another Campion penalty as they closed the gap to just a single point.

Although the Newmarket faithful began to get nervous, as the old mistakes had begun to creep back into their game, there was to be no worry as the ever- reliable Reeves drove the Newmarket pack forward and over the line.

Lewis Smith was the next to benefit from the forward platform, crashing over from short range following a textbook catch and drive.

Reeves added the extras and with a bonus point secured Newmarket held a 24-11 lead going into the final 15 minutes.

Newmarket were not quite finished. Steven Green capped an excellent all-round game to scythe through the Campion defence and leave Reeves with the simplest of conversions to end an impressive second half and hand Newmarket a much-deserved win.
