Godfrey believes top-four finish is possible

Newmarket director of rugby Gareth Godfrey is confident the club can go on to achieve a top-four finish if they improve their levels of consistency.

Following on from Saturday’s impressive 22-34 win over promotion chasing Ipswich YM, Godfrey believes the Scaltback-based side, who currently sit fifth in Greene King IPA Eastern Counties Division One, can go on to bigger and better things by stringing together a run of point-scoring displays.

“We had quite a lot of young players out on Saturday and they played really well,” said Godfrey. “It showed what we are capable of.

“What was impressive was the fact we didn’t panic while trailing in the first half before we took control in the second half.

“It is comforting to know that we are improving, but what we need to do now is be more consistent on a weekly basis as this is what has held us back.

“Taking all things into account we are not going to go unbeaten for the rest of the season, but I would be disappointed if we can’t reach the top four should we play how we can.”

Newmarket will bid to follow up last weekend’s success in their local derby clash with Ely this Saturday.

Last time the two sides met in the league at Downham Road back in November, Newmarket ran out 41-24 winners.

“Although we ended up winning fairly comfortably last time we met it was only in the final 10 minutes that we really asserted,” said Godfrey.

“In terms of the teams’ strengths I think they have a very good set of backs while we have strong set of forwards.

“They will have a point to prove and a score to settle as they will not have liked conceding 40 points against us at home, so it should be a good match.

“It is one we are looking forward to.”

Newmarket will be forced into making two changes for the weekend visit of the Tigers, with both Sherard Franklin and Pat Kearney unavailable for the clash.

Although missing both Franklin and Kearney, the Scaltback side are to welcome back the services of Mike Reeves and Richard Harper, both of whom missed the victory over Ipswich YM.

Saturday’s match at Scaltback will kick-off at 2pm.
