Ely Tigers 32
Woodbridge Warriors 19
A brace of tries from Lee Coulson helped Ely Tigers bounce back to winning ways against Woodbridge Warriors on Saturday.
After a solid Woodbridge scrum, Jono Cooke was penalised for holding on and Scott Paul missed a penalty attempt.
Ely scored the first points of the game after Dan Coulson put in a great run to win a scrum on the 22 from which Lee Coulson scored, converted by Paul.
From the restart, Woodbridge chased fast and caught Ely by surprise as Neil Scopes scored.
The end-to-end game continued as Dan Coulson set up an overlap on the left and Coulson scored again.
Ely ended the half on top, driving a maul 20m and exploiting penalties for Mitchel Kennett to score to give them a 17-5 lead at the break.
Woodbridge restarted by defending well against Dan Coulson and Cornwell.
Jamie Smith and Errol Jones countered to the Ely 22 for Cooke to pick up and score a converted try, narrowing the gap to five points.
Ely, despite regular slips between Ed Fahy and John Dibb, forced the Warriors back to their 5m line and Sam Smith scored on the right after some sustained pressure.
Woodbridge redoubled their efforts in defence, but it only seemed to increase the penalty count as Ely kicked them back.
Paul took three points and, after an opportunistic kick through and possible score, unseen by the ref, the hard-working Cornwell picked up and scored a converted try.
Woodbridge exploited a quickly-taken penalty through Tom Stokes, James Snelling, Taff Lloyd to Scopes to score a converted try, but it was too little too late to improve on the final score.
