Newmarket II 5 Cambridge South IV 1

FOUR goals from Will Hosegood helped Newmarket beat the winter blues against relegation-threatened Cambridge South VI on Saturday.

With both teams trying to get into their stride, as well as battle the freezing elements, the first 20 minutes of the game looked to be fairly evenly.

Newmarket soon began to get into the swing of things, however, and took the lead midway through the opening period through Hosegood.

A determined South were not giving up and proved themselves to be troublesome after the break, but it was the hosts who were to extend their lead over Cambridge grabbing an equaliser.

Will Balding’s sharp reactions inside the D saw the forward strike the fast moving ball at an almost impossible angle to be rewarded with the satisfying sound of the ball rattling the backboard.

With fire in their stomachs, Newmarket stepped up a gear and Chris Evans played a lovely cross into Hosegood’s stick, which found the goal again.

Youngster Jordan Walker used his youth to keep the energy of the team up and found himself in some good positions which frustrated the opposition, before Hosegood managed to beat the keeper twice more to rack up a healthy four-goal spree.

As the final whistle went, Newmarket left the pitch feeling happy with a 5-1 result knowing that with games in hand, and only one point separating them from the top of the leaderboard, promotion is certainly well within reach.
