NEWMARKET JOURNAL JAN 2011. NEWMARKET ASTLEY CLUB BOXER TOMMY SMITH AGED 13 SUFFOLK CHAMPIONSHIP WINNER.

DREAMS of becoming an Amateur Boxing Association (ABA) schoolboy champion moved one step closer for Newmarket’s New Astley Club fighter Tommy Smith on Saturday.

Taking on Southern Counties champion Ben Stevens in a pre-quarter-final bout in the class two under-40kg category, the 13 year old put in a polished performance to readily outpoint his opponent from Hampshire 16-7.

After a very even first round Smith, who is reigning Eastern Region champion, stepped up a gear, picking off the Farnham Warrior boxer with some good accurate points-scoring punches in the second round.

Smith continued to dominate the contest in the final round to wrap up the convincing win.

“The first round was very even between the two and that’s where Stevens got his points. There was nothing in it,” said Mark O’Reilly, head coach at the New Astley Club.

“After that Tommy just went through the gears and counter-punched the boy to great effect. He was far too accurate for Stevens.

“On paper it seemed a fair contest as there was not much between the two fighters, but Tommy really showed his class with another exceptional performance.”

There is to be a quick turnaround for Smith, who will be back in action this weekend when taking on Western Counties champion John Coffee in Bristol for a place in the semi-final of this year’s competition.

“We have a game plan in place but we are not looking to far ahead instead just taking it one bout at a time,” added O’Reilly.
