Terrific Tommy turns on the style

TEENAGE boxing star Tommy Smith put in another polished performance in the ring at the weekend after cruising into the semi-finals of this year’s National Schoolboys’ ABA Championships.

Taking on Western Counties champion John Coffee from Bristol’s Broad Plain ABC, the 13 year old who fights for Newmarket’s New Astley Club, turned the class two under-40kg bout into a one-man show.

Taking the first round 8-3, Smith — who is the reigning Eastern Counties champion — showed his true class, picking his punches carefully to open up a 19-4 lead.

The one-way traffic continued in the final round with Smith only allowing Coffee to get another point on the board, before registering a 27-5 win to book his place in the semi-finals of this year’s competition.

“Tommy was far too clever and quick at the weekend and simply blew the other lad away with his punching,” said coach Mark O’Reilly. “The second round really was the killer round — it was a fantastic performance.”

Smith will be back in action this weekend when taking on Michael Price from Pinewood Star ABC.

Home Counties’ champion Price set up the clash with Smith after defeating Repton ABC’s Robert Becks.

“Tommy is a very tall lad for his weight category and from what I have been told Price is not the biggest of boxers,” added O’Reilly. “Hopefully Tommy can put in another big performance and see his way into the final.”
