Terrific Thomas helps to lead ladies to big win

CAMBS WOMEN’S LEAGUE

PREMIER DIVISION

Newmarket 8 Cambridge South 1

DI THOMAS was the star of the show as Newmarket made light work of Cambridge South.

It took just two minutes for Town to capitalise – Thomas hitting home from the top of the D.

Claire McDonnell weaved her way through to sneak a shot home before Thomas took advantage of a gap in midfield and deflected home from close range.

She was able to do the same minutes later, nipping in front of the keeper to get her hat-trick and taking Newmarket to 4-0 at half-time.

Cambridge pulled one back at the start of the second period, but Tania Fisher, Gail McDonnell and Kat Burrell all executed perfectly-timed tackles to swiftly end any hope the visitors had of fighting back.

Isabel Hooley swept in from the top of the D, scoring just her second goal for Newmarket in 10 years.

Hayley Stoneman was next to create space for herself in midfield and hammered the ball home before Thomas’ strike was bundled over the line by a defender.

The scoring was wrapped up when Claire McDonnell combined well with Martha Crowhurst to get her second of the game with a reverse stick sweep.

n There was to be no such luck for either the Newmarket II team after slipping to a crushing 8-1 defeat on the road to Ipswich IV in the Suffolk Premier League clash, while the Newmarket III team fared no better in their Cambs Second Division match after going down 4-0 at home to St Neots III.

EAST MEN’S LEAGUE

DIVISION FOUR NORTH WEST

Newmarket 13 St Neots II 2

NEWMARKET made it 22 goals in just three games after routing third-place St Neots.

The hosts broke the deadlock when Alex Andreou collected Ollie Wade’s pass and fired into the net, but St Neots hit back to briefly lead before the floodgates opened.

With full-backs Will Wilson and Dave Worrall providing width, Andreou soon scored his and the team’s second with a direct strike from a penalty corner.

The third goal came from a another penalty corner, which was slipped to Wade. He slapped to the far post where Josh Dawson deflected in.

Goal number four arrived when Chris Leggett drove into the 25 and played Mark Pears in for a neat first-time finish, before Dawson made it five with his second of the game.

With St Neots down to 10 men, Wade scored a tap-in on the stroke of half-time.

The second half continued in the same vein. Andreou completed his hat-trick with a fine reverse stick shot into the far corner before Mike Skelton added the eighth, tapping home a rebound.

Mark Pears scored the ninth, reacting first to a save from the goalie. Andreou made it 10 from another penalty corner strike, and Wade scored his second from close range.

Chris Leggett scored the last two goals of the game, both fully deserved after his man-of-the-match performance in central midfield.
