Swimming: Two days, 98 swims and 94 personal bests

LAST weekend was an action-packed one for swimmers from Newmarket.

The Suffolk Development Championships were held at the Crown Pools in Ipswich and 19 members of the club rattled up some impressive results. Between them over the two days they completed 98 swims, 94 of which were in personal best times. There were also 16 county qualifying times recorded.

These magnificent efforts lifted Newmarket into fifth place overall, a notable improvement on the ninth place in 2008 and a measure of how the club is progressing. Coach, Annette Skeet, gave fulsome praise to her squad and was quick to point out that the swimmers support for each other was second to none.

She also reported a weighty haul of medals. Craig Collier brought home three gold, two silver and a bronze; Sam Minns two gold and a silver; Ollie Trent gold, three silver and a bronze; Sam Nelson gold, three silver and two bronze; Jessica Nelson gold, three silver and two bronze; Ethan Lubbock gold, two silver and two bronze; Sam Doe gold, silver and bronze; Alex Fussey gold and four bronze; Abby Vine silver and bronze; Lauren McGivern silver; Molly Ollington two bronze and Emma Stannard bronze.

Earlier in the month four of the Newmarket elite swimmers, Ashley Trent, Braddan Westlake, Maya Westlake and Adam Kemp, participated in the Regional BagCat Championships in the 50 metre pool at the University of East Anglia in Norwich and between them they netted 29 personal bests. They were competing at a very high level and their achievements underline the hard work they have put in throughout the year under the guidance and training schedule of the club's teaching team.
