Swifts book final place

BURWELL Swifts reached the final of the John Ablett Cup with the weather doing its best to ruin both sides' efforts.

During the match there were strong winds, sun, hail, sleet and snow to contend with – but the result for the Swifts was all that mattered in the changing room after the game.

The Swifts had the advantage of the wind in the first half but laboured to string passes together as Ely mastered the conditions better.

But the best chances fell to the home side with Alan Nash and Carl Saxby springing the offside trap for a one-on-one with the keeper.

The keeper saved from Nash before Saxby beat him, only to see his shot come back off a post.

The second half saw an improvement from the home team but quality in the final ball was missing, and the match went into extra-time with neither team creating any clear-cut chances.

The Swifts were against the wind for the first 15 minutes and scored the all-important goal early on.

They broke down the left and Danny Jones played the ball across the field for Nash to get to the ball before the defender.

As the keeper came out to close down the angle, Nash shot from 12 yards into the bottom right-hand corner to start the celebrations.

The remainder of the game was close but the Swifts held on and head for the final at Histon FC on May 8, kick off 7.30pm.

Final score: Burwell Swifts 1, Ely Crusaders 0 (aet)
