Stand-in is Pat's fourth victim

NEWMARKET boxer Pat McAleese delighted his travelling fans by beating stand-in opponent Byron Vince over four rounds at York Hall, Bethnal Green on Sunday, writes Simon Euan-Smith.

The Northampton light-middleweight stepped in after scheduled opponent Karl Ozimkowski backed out at the last minute.

McAleese took charge from the opening bell, with referee Marcus McDonnell's 40-36 scoreline suggesting he won every round.

Afterwards, McAleese revealed he had virtually no sparring for the fight.

"I got nicked over the left eyelid in sparring – you can still see the nick," he said. "So I couldn't spar for about three weeks.

"Then, in the first week back, I got caught by an elbow on my right bicep – it was really badly bruised. So I could only practise my jab and generally get myself fit although I did train hard, physically.

"It took me a couple of rounds to get my rhythm and then there were times when I thought he was going to go – I don't know how he stood up to some of my shots."

Trainer Jimmy Tibbs was very pleased with McAleese's performance.

"I'm not surprised he didn't stop Vince – he'll stay all night. Pat looked good, especially the way he moved. That was a real improvement," he said.

McAleese has now won four out of four fights as a professional – all at the famous East London venue.

His next outing could be nearer home, at Peterborough, on March 7 where he could face his first bout over six rounds.

McAleese, 22, is hopoing his performances will do enough to impress David Haye's Hayemaker promotion company and earn a place on the undercard for Haye's world heavyweight title clash against Wladimir Klitscho, scheduled for the O2 Arena in June.
