SPEEDWAY: Campaign underway to save Tigers

FORMER Mildenhall Fen Tigers promoter Simon Barton is spearheading a new campaign in a bid to get the team back on track.

The Secure Mildenhall Speedway (SMS) group has been set up by Barton and five other fans just weeks after the club was forced to withdraw from this year's National League.

The team was forced to abandon plans for the 2010 season earlier this month after failing to secure a buyer following outgoing chairman Ray Mascall's decision to sell the club.

"The aim is to help raise funds and the profile of the club for whoever takes it on next," said Barton.

"Fans of the Edinburgh Monarchs have been doing something similar for the past decade and annually raise between 4,000-5,000. If we could raise a 2,000 a year it would be a massive help to running a National League Club."

On Monday evening the group managed to get a new banner promoting the campaign aired during Sky Sports coverage of the Ipswich Witches live Elite League clash with Swindon.

The group have a number of events planned to take place within the next two months starting with a night at the dogs at Mildenhall Stadium.
