Soham lose out in five-set doubles drama

Soham Comrades only lost to Ely and District League Division One defending champions Haddenham when Kieran and Christian Mohan beat Kevin Gray and Mark Lillyman in a five-set doubles.

Earlier, Gray had won all his singles, but the unfortunate Alan Chambers had lost his three.

Mark Lillyman played well to defeat Patrick Mohan in four sets after losing to both Christian and Kieran.

Going into the doubles, the home side were 4-3 behind, but despite recovering from two legs down by taking the third and fourth legs 11-2 and 11-4, they were unable to force a draw when they lost the fifth leg 11-9.

Steve Trevanion made a rare appearance for Fulbourn II, winning three singles, including an epic battle with Tony Comiskey when he recovered from two legs down to take the fifth 11-9.

With Max Schwiening also scoring a maximum and Harris Ryder beating Colin Gannon, Fulbourn outscored Comrades II to take the match 7-3.

The league table shows Comrades and Elsworth as leaders with Haddenham only one point adrift, but with two games in hand.

The Fulbourn versus Elsworth match ended in a draw.

In Division Two, a purposeful Comrades III team travelled to Fulbourn V and quickly finished them off after an uncertain start.

Fulbourn’s Simon Johnson took the first leg 18-16 against Rob Wallis, but Wallis threw off the effects of a tedious journey to reassert himself.

Phil Hague then did even better for Fulbourn, denting the confidence of Bela Szabo to claim a notable scalp.

However, Comrades showed their pedigree to roar through the rest of the card and take the match 9-1.

No more matches reported from Division II this week where Soham Comrades III comfortably head the league table with 69 points followed by Haddenham II on 50.

Ellesmere are next, only five points behind, but they are in danger of being caught by Fulbourn III, who have 42 points with a game in hand.

In the Division Three league table, Comrades V have a six-point lead over Fulbourn VI, who are closely followed by Impington II and Elsworth II.
