NEWMARKET AND DISTRICT LEAGUE SINGLES

SEMI-FINALS

STEVIE Kerr was made to work hard for victory in his match against Karl Hills.

He took the first frame but Hills levelled the match with a superb break to set up a decider.

In the final frame, both players showed signs of nerves, but it was the potting power of Kerr that won the match.

In the other game, Colin Johnson had the run of the balls and a fluke to help him towards a 2-0 victory over Paul Jefferies, who by his standards was not firing on all cylinders.

The final venue is yet to be decided, but it is expected to be a sell-out.

Johnson got to the final by first beating Tom Parry (2-0), Simon Stepney (2-1) before a tough game with Mildenhall captain Richard Lyes (2-0) and finally the talented Paul Jefferies (2-0).

Kerr had to beat Ian Starling (2-0), Dale Jeffery (2-0) before taking on yet another Cheveley Royal British Legion player Mark Avison (2-1) before overcoming Hills (2-1) and must now be the favourite to land the title.

CAMBRIDGE Snooker Centre, propping up the bottom of the table, had nothing to lose in this match and gained a rare victory.

Joey Wong was first up for the visitors and played a strong game taking an early lead and held on to beat Mark Ashpole 59-25.

Legion’s Ian Starling bounced back from his recent singles knockout defeat to secure a good win over Ron Lemmon 100-73.

Ashley Scarr hit a 22 break in the next against Dave Ingham, who forced the game to the black to which Scarr potted to win 51-44.

Mark Avison levelled the match, winning the last billiards game for the home side, defeating Jordan Lemmon 100-75.

In the decider, Cambridge reserve player Jonny Chapman was in outstanding form, knocking in a 22 break to beat the formidable Dave Rabbeth 57-30 and win the match.
