Runners brave the elements for half-marathon
More than 150 runners braved wet conditions to take part for the second annual Lode Half Marathon on Sunday.
Despite the weather not being favourable, 157 runners lined up for the 13-mile contest which took runners from Lode to Wicken Fen and back again.
Outright victory went the way of Charles Wartnaby who crossed the line in 1 hour 17 minutes 54 seconds.
Chasing him home in second in a time of 1:18:11 was Peter Flewitt, while third place went the way of Newmarket Joggers Denys Olefir who finished in 1:19:34.
In the women’s event, George Schwiening was head and shoulders above the opposition after finishing five minutes ahead of her nearest rival in a time of 1:25:49.
Lisa Marriott took second in 1:31:03 with Emma Sherman-James back in third completing in 1:35:13.
As a result of entry fees and sponsorship for the race, £3,200 was collected, which will now be split between the East Anglian Children’s Hospices and the Lode Social Club.
“Considering the weather conditions we had we were extremely pleased with the turnout and the amount raised for both groups on the day,” said Tessa Shrubbs, co-organiser of the event.
