Rob powers to maximum as Fulbourn turn on the style

The Ely and District Table Tennis League resumed its fixtures this week, but with only two matches reported this is a chance to view the three divisions at this stage.

In Division Three, Rob Powell scored a maximum for Fulbourn VII when they visited Ely II, which included a five-set victory over Robert Pownall, having recovered from two sets down.

Powell’s efforts were supported by two wins from Carl Woolf and one from Pat Lloyd.

Ely took the doubles when Karen Byford and Pownall beat Powell and Woolf in straight sets.

In the second round of the Newmarket Journal Handicap Cup, Impington II beat Soham 5-2 to reach the semi-finals.

Jeff Catlin won the two singles he played against Jay Johnson and Martin Heyes and he was well supported by daughters Amy, with one win, and Ena, with two wins.

Amy came from two legs down against Heyes to take the last three.

Ena beat Heyes in three, but her most notable success was against Soham’s Tony Everitt, when, having been caught at 29-all, she smashed two backhand winners to reach 31.

In the second leg, Everitt could not repeat his marathon performance and Ena won 31-23.
